Year 8 Boys State Table Tennis

A big congratulations to the five students who represented Sirius College in the Year 8 Boys State Table Tennis Tournament on Friday the 30th of November. The team earned the right to compete in states after winning the Northern Metro Regional tournament earlier in term four.

On the day our boys stood up under gruelling pressure from their talented first round opponent, Gilson College. As our top two seeds lost their matches it seemed an early exit from the tournament was likely. However, our third and fourth seeds (Ozgur Hasimoglu and Luay Moghnieh) helped to draw level with Gilson after hard fought wins. These results gave the team enough confidence and momentum to take out the doubles matches and into a semi-final. Unfortunately we could not win through to the final, losing 4-2 to Mount Waverly Secondary College (the eventual State Champions).

However our talented squad still placed 3rd in the state as a result of making the semi-final, an enormous achievement for the students and the college. There are nearly 400 schools which compete in this competition, so to be placed 3rd overall speaks volumes of the team’s accomplishment.

The members of the team are:

Tarik Ayvaz(8B), Mekaal Khan(8C), Ozgur Hasimoglu(8C), Luay Moghnieh(8B) and Baher Al Musawi(8A).

Well done boys! Hats off to you!
